Founded in 2012, Shopaau began with a simple desire: to tell stories of culture, identity and belonging through what we wear.
Long before Shopaau became a fully realized fashion house, it began as an exploration. Founder and Creative Director Asiyami Gold, a Nigerian-born visual storyteller, had spent much of her life existing between worlds, between Nigeria and America, heritage and discovery, memory and imagination. Travel became one of the ways she made sense of those worlds. Wherever she went, she found herself drawn to the language of a place: its textiles, architecture, craftsmanship, color, people and traditions.
Fashion became another language through which those stories could be told.
In its earliest years, Shopaau was experimental. Small collections were created from fabrics Asiyami discovered during her travels, including Ankara textiles hand-selected on trips home to Nigeria. Each piece became a way of carrying a place, a memory or a piece of heritage forward.
But the brand was never intended to simply make beautiful clothes.
At its heart was a much bigger question:
How do we move forward without losing where we come from?
That question became the foundation of Shopaau.
The name A.Au itself carries the language of value Au, the chemical symbol for gold and reflects a philosophy that has remained central to the brand: that our histories, identities and cultures are not things to shed in pursuit of modernity. They are valuable. They are inheritance.
In 2016, that philosophy began taking a more defined form.
During one of the most financially difficult periods of Asiyami’s life, she poured what she had into creating. A collection photographed in Mexico became a pivotal chapter for the brand. Behind the beauty of the imagery was a season marked by extraordinary uncertainty, but also conviction, the belief that imagination could create possibility even when circumstances suggested otherwise.
That chapter helped transform Shopaau from an experiment into a world.
Over the years, travel continued to shape its visual vocabulary. Thailand, Kenya, Morocco, India, Mexico, Nigeria and countless encounters with artisans, architecture, landscapes and communities became points of departure, not as costumes to replicate, but as invitations to look more deeply at craftsmanship, history and the ways people express identity through dress.
The result is a brand rooted in global curiosity and distinctly African memory.
Shopaau creates clothing for the woman who understands that where she comes from can inform where she is going.
She is curious about the world without needing to abandon herself to experience it. She carries history without being confined by it. She can move between Lagos, Mexico City, Jaipur, London or Atlanta and remain unmistakably herself.
Our clothes reflect that duality: structure and movement, tradition and experimentation, femininity and strength, familiarity and discovery.
Previous descriptions of A.Au captured this philosophy as empowering women to embrace their history, remain connected to their roots and carry forward the narrative of their legacy. (Who What Wear) The brand has also been recognized for drawing from global experiences and atelier craftsmanship while creating pieces characterized by freedom and cultural identity. (Dreamery)
We believe the future of African design does not require abandoning tradition. It can begin by returning to it. By studying it. By preserving it. And then having the courage to imagine what it can become next.
Shopaau is a story of homecoming.
A story about wandering far enough to understand the value of where you began.
A story about women carrying their histories into new places.
A story about clothing becoming memory, inheritance and possibility.
Founded in 2012. Rooted in Africa. Shaped by the world. Designed for where we are going.
